Mountain bikers gear up for SUBARU Sani2c

The sixth annual SUBARU Sani2c will once again be testing top local and international off road cyclists later this week. The event will see 1500 teams of two cyclists working their way from the Underberg school to Scottburgh's main beach, a total distance of 271km, over the course of three days.

The event is run as two separate races, the SUBARU Sani2c, and the SUBARU
Sani2c Adventure, running between 3- 5 March and 4 - 6 March respectively.
The elite field boasts some of the most competitive and successful off road
marathon cyclists in the world. Kevin Evans, who was part of the winning
team last year along with David George, is once again part of the top seeded
team. His Team MTN partner this year is World Marathon and Austrian National
Champ Alban Lakata.

South Coast local Burry Stander, who is the current under-23 MTB Marathon
World Champ, has teamed up with Ben Melt Swanepoel to form Team Specialized,
and they will surely be pushing the top seeds from Team MTN all the way to
the finish line.

While the elite race has attracted the top international and local cyclists,
the field for the adventure race, which is no less demanding as it follows
an identical route to the elite race, will see some of SA's most well known
celebrities including cricket legend Jonty Rhodes and his brother Clint, as
well as former Springbok rugby player John Allan.

Event organizer Craig Wapnick said that "the popularity of mountain biking
has really exploded in the last few years, with as many as 25 mountain
bikers for each road cyclist. Whilst this ensures that we have a captive
audience for our event, it does not guarantee success. Thanks to Farmer
Glen, who is the founder of the event, we are able to provide an absolutely
amazing route. Single track is what off road cyclists live for, and the
Sani2c has become well known for its long stretches of single track which
have basically been carved out of the mountainside".

As the race passes through mainly rural areas during its 271km journey
between Underberg and Scottburgh, it presents an opportunity for local
communities to add value to the event and raise funds for themselves.
Wapnick said that "opportunities include assisting with the logistical
operations such as course preparation, bike washing, seconding tables and
catering. Since Sani2c covers any costs that are incurred by these
activities, and also pays for the beneficiaries for their time and effort,
the locals are highly motivated and passionate about the success of the
event".
