REGION: Mpumalanga CLOSEST CITY/TOWN: Nelspruit TRAIL DESCRIPTION: The perfect mix for a 2-3 hour ride, big mountains, endless singletrack, boardwalks, bush tunnels and fast flowing jeep tracks. Mpumalanga has huge mountains, which means awesome views. DISTANCE: 30km NOVICE: 3/10 INTERMEDIATE: 10/10 ADVANCED: 8/10 TYRES: Choose a tyre that’s best for rocky and mostly damp terrain. BEST THING: Amazing singletrack and the bush tunnels. WORST THING: The first 3.5km climb is a bit unforgiving. BEST SEASON: Good in all seasons; a bit wetter in summer though GET THERE: Get onto the N4 from Pretoria or Joburg and follow the signs to Nelspruit. About 30km before Nelspruit, turn left onto the R539 towards Sudwala Caves. After 6km turn right into the Mankele main entrance. It’s about 350km (3hrs30min) from Joburg or Pretoria. COST: R30 for day visitors, which includes access to: swimming pools, river tubing, entertainment area and braai areas. Email or call for accommodation rates.
