Much hype has surrounded Morewood’s first steps into the XC/marathon category, by far the biggest segment of the local mountain bike market. We got an early production model of the new Zula to review for Issue 3 of TREAD magazine, but here’s a quick summary after my first ride.
LOOKS: White with burgundy and black detail. What can I say; a white bike just looks so damn good!
FRAME: A trusty single-pivot aluminium design that’s deceptively light (apparently it’s around 10.3kg, but we only weigh bikes after they’ve been test ridden). It’s got strong lines that are just softened enough to give the bike great visual appeal. There’s a Fox Float RP23 shock with 100mm of travel to take care of rear end comfort and control.
RIDE: Cornering and descents were a pleasure as the bike’s geometry (we’ll find out what the angles are soon, but assume it’s got a slightly relaxed head tube) put me in a position of complete control, which was confidence inspiring. Climbing wasn’t super fast, but I still need to tweak the set-up and shock pressures so that’s in no way a final word on its ascending ability. Our test team is looking forward to taking it to some more rugged terrain in the next couple of weeks.
PRICE: Not sure really. I’ve heard the figure R45000 being bandied about but will get confirmation on that after all the test riding is done.
